Yann LeCun, Meta's chief AI scientist and Turing Award winner, is reportedly planning to leave the company to establish his own startup. This move comes as Meta CEO Mark Zuckerberg increases investments in AI, reorganising initiatives under Superintelligence Labs. LeCun, who has been with Meta since 2013, is recognised as a pioneer in deep learning.
LeCun is in early discussions to secure funding for his new venture. Previously reporting to chief product officer Chris Cox, LeCun now reports to Alexandr Wang, former CEO of Scale AI, who was hired to lead Meta's new AI efforts. Meta has been integrating AI features across its platforms, including Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp.
News of LeCun's planned departure has already impacted Meta's stock, which fell by 1.5%. His exit could affect Meta's AI development as it competes with other tech companies in the rapidly evolving AI sector.
