Meta is reducing its AI workforce by approximately 600 employees within Meta Superintelligence Labs. The company aims to accelerate its progress in the competitive AI landscape. The layoffs will affect units like FAIR and product AI, but the newly formed TBD Lab remains unaffected. Meta is encouraging impacted employees to apply for other roles within the company.
The restructuring aims to create a more agile operation. Meta's Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang, stated the move would streamline decision-making and increase individual responsibility. Despite the cuts, Meta is still investing heavily in AI, including a previous $14.3 billion investment in Scale AI.
This move reflects Meta's strategy to balance significant AI investments with efficient resource allocation. The company expects expenses between $114 billion and $118 billion as it competes with rivals like OpenAI and Google.
