Tilly Norwood, an AI-generated actress created by Xicoia, has ignited debate in Hollywood. Xicoia, a spin-off from Particle6, aims to develop hyperreal digital stars for film, television, social media and interactive platforms. The company envisions Norwood as a screen-ready AI actress, available for any role and always ready to perform.
Norwood's emergence has drawn criticism from actors and the Screen Actors Guild (SAG-AFTRA). Concerns revolve around AI potentially encroaching on scarce job opportunities and devaluing human artistry. Some argue that using the term 'actress' for an algorithmically generated avatar blurs the line between human performance and automation. SAG-AFTRA has stated that AI-generated characters trained on the work of professional performers without consent or compensation are unacceptable.
Despite the backlash, Xicoia maintains that Norwood is not intended to replace human actors but to offer a new creative tool, similar to animation or CGI. The company claims that several entertainment companies have expressed interest in signing deals with the AI actress, with an agency representation announcement expected in the coming months.
