What happened
Intel announced its participation in Elon Musk's Terafab AI chip project, collaborating with SpaceX, xAI, and Tesla. This partnership aims to produce 1 terawatt per year of compute for AI and robotics, integrating chip design, fabrication, memory, and advanced packaging. Intel stated its capabilities will accelerate Terafab's goal, following Musk's earlier plans for two Austin-based chip factories: one for humanoid robots and electric vehicles, another for space-based AI data centres. Intel's shares rose approximately 3% after the announcement.
Why it matters
Access to vertically integrated chip manufacturing capabilities will accelerate AI and robotics development for platform engineers and founders. The Terafab project's goal of 1 terawatt of annual compute capacity establishes a new metric for in-house chip production, shifting reliance from external foundries. This follows Musk's announcement last month regarding two Austin-based chip factories. Procurement teams should note the shift towards integrated chip production, impacting future supply chain strategies.
