What happened
Senior international financial officials, including Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey and ECB President Christine Lagarde, warned that Anthropic's new Claude Mythos Preview AI model could threaten the global banking system. Anthropic stated Mythos found thousands of high-severity vulnerabilities across major operating systems and web browsers, demonstrating an autonomous ability to chain exploits beyond human scale. The model has been shared with approximately 40 companies, including Amazon, Apple, and JPMorgan Chase, for vulnerability testing.
Why it matters
Access to advanced AI models like Mythos introduces a new class of cyber risk, fundamentally shifting the attacker-defender balance for financial institutions. Security architects and procurement teams must now account for AI-driven vulnerability discovery and exploitation at a scale far exceeding human capabilities, requiring immediate re-evaluation of existing cyber defence strategies. This capability limits the effectiveness of traditional human-centric security operations, demanding accelerated investment in AI-powered defence mechanisms and international regulatory frameworks.
