What happened
Men aged 22-45 are increasingly comfortable discussing personal feelings with AI tools; a Use.AI survey found 78% of US and UK men preferred AI over friends or family. Licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Shahrzad Jalali attributes this trend to AI providing a private, non-reactive space, lowering the threshold for emotional expression. Men use AI to practice difficult conversations, which encourages them to initiate dialogues they might otherwise avoid.
Why it matters
Product teams and founders in AI therapy face unmanaged risks as men increasingly rely on AI for mental health support. AI can reduce the initial shame barrier, but its inability to replicate human interaction means it cannot facilitate true healing or challenge cognitive distortions, potentially validating users without promoting growth. A 2025 study indicates large language models can make inappropriate or dangerous statements to vulnerable individuals, including those with suicidal ideation. Teams must assume agentic workflows are untrusted and prioritise stringent safety protocols.
