What happened
GitHub updated its Copilot interaction data usage policy, effective April 24. The change permits using interaction data—including inputs, outputs, code snippets, and associated context—from Copilot Free, Pro, and Pro+ users for AI model training. Copilot Business and Copilot Enterprise users are exempt. Users can opt out via privacy settings; prior opt-out preferences are retained. This data may be shared with GitHub affiliates like Microsoft but not with third-party AI model providers.
Why it matters
Access to real-world interaction data will enhance Copilot's AI models, aiming for improved suggestion accuracy and bug detection. This mechanism shifts the default for individual developers, requiring active opt-out for Free, Pro, and Pro+ users to prevent their code context and interactions from contributing to model training. Procurement teams and platform engineers must now account for this default data collection, ensuring compliance with internal data governance policies for developer tools.
