What happened
TRAI Chairman Anil Kumar Lahoti declared AI integral to telecom networks, moving beyond a peripheral role in design, management, and user experience. AI currently enables self-optimising networks, predictive maintenance, intelligent spectrum management, enhanced cybersecurity, energy efficiency, and improved customer experience. Lahoti noted India's digital transformation includes over one billion data subscribers by late 2025, with 5G contributing 400 million and over 10 million terabytes of 25 million total wireless data usage. He added 6G will feature AI-native network design for highly reliable, low-latency, and personalised services.
Why it matters
Telecom operators are compelled to integrate AI across network design and operations, shifting from optional enhancements to core infrastructure. This impacts network architects and engineering teams, requiring new skill sets for AI-native 6G network development, promising highly reliable, low-latency services. Procurement teams must prioritise AI-driven solutions for efficiency and security, as TRAI recognises AI's role in fraud and spam detection. The scale of India's digital growth, with 400 million 5G subscribers, underscores the immediate operational imperative for AI adoption.
