What happened
Nvidia invested $1 billion in Nokia through share purchases at $6.01 each, establishing a partnership to accelerate AI-RAN innovation and the 5G-to-6G transition. Nokia will integrate Nvidia's AI-RAN products, enhancing spectral efficiency and mobile AI inference capabilities. The collaboration extends to data centre networking, combining Nokia's SR Linux software with Nvidia's Spectrum-X Ethernet platform, and exploring Nokia's optical technologies for Nvidia's AI infrastructure. T-Mobile U.S. will trial these AI-RAN technologies for 6G development from 2026, supported by Dell Technologies' PowerEdge servers.
Why it matters
The integration of Nvidia's AI-RAN products into Nokia's portfolio and the convergence of Nokia's SR Linux with Nvidia's Spectrum-X platform introduce new, complex interdependencies within network infrastructure. This creates an increased oversight burden for network operations and IT security teams, requiring enhanced due diligence on the integrated AI and networking components. The shift towards AI-native mobile networks also raises exposure for compliance and architecture teams to new operational constraints related to data processing, security, and performance within a multi-vendor 6G ecosystem.
