Cerebras, an AI chip startup, is seeking $1.1 billion in private funding, which may delay its initial public offering (IPO). The company is aiming to challenge Nvidia's dominance in the AI computing market.
Cerebras has developed the Wafer Scale Engine (WSE), a large chip designed for AI inference. The company claims its technology offers speeds up to 20 times faster than Nvidia's GPUs for specific AI tasks. The WSE eliminates the need for external memory, reducing bottlenecks and boosting performance. The company's architecture can deliver significantly faster performance for models like LLaMA 3.1.
Cerebras is expanding its data centre footprint, including new locations in North America and Europe. These facilities will increase the company's inference capacity, positioning it to compete more aggressively with Nvidia. However, Nvidia's established software and hardware ecosystem presents a significant challenge.
