Japan is set to enhance its national security by investing in its subsea cable infrastructure. The government plans to subsidise the country's leading undersea cable provider, enabling them to acquire cable-laying vessels. This move aims to address the increasing demand for data links, driven by the growth of artificial intelligence and concerns about potential sabotage.
Subsea cables are critical for international communications, handling approximately 99% of Japan's data. Recognising their importance, the Japanese government is prioritising the sector for national security. This includes supporting investments to increase both cable production and installation capabilities. The initiative aims to reduce reliance on foreign companies for cable installation and ensure the security of these vital communication links.
This strategic decision reflects Japan's broader efforts to protect its economic security and critical infrastructure.
