OpenAI is enhancing ChatGPT with improved mental health support features. The AI model will now be better at detecting signs of mental or emotional distress in user conversations. When such signs are detected, ChatGPT is designed to respond appropriately and offer guidance to evidence-based resources.
In addition to improved detection, the update includes gentle reminders for users to take breaks during long conversations. These reminders are intended to encourage healthier usage patterns and prevent potential issues like emotional dependency or the blurring of reality and simulation. The break reminders will appear as pop-up notifications during extended chat sessions.
OpenAI has been working with experts, including over 90 physicians from various countries, to refine ChatGPT's responses in critical moments. The goal is to ensure the AI provides helpful and grounded support while avoiding direct answers for high-stakes personal decisions. Instead, ChatGPT will assist users in thinking through problems by offering questions and weighing pros and cons.
