OpenAI Revenue Doubles Rapidly

1 August 2025

OpenAI's revenue has doubled in the first seven months of 2025, reaching an annualised $12 billion, driven by the widespread adoption of ChatGPT and other AI tools. This translates to roughly $1 billion in monthly revenue, with approximately 700 million weekly active users across both consumer and enterprise products. The company's cash burn is projected to reach $8 billion for the year, primarily due to the high computational costs associated with training and running its AI models.

Microsoft has invested $13 billion in OpenAI and is entitled to 49% of OpenAI Global, LLC’s profits, capped at ten times their investment. Microsoft is also seeking stronger rights and deeper equity to ensure continued access to OpenAI's technology, even if the startup achieves artificial general intelligence (AGI). While OpenAI maintains a strong position in the consumer market, its share of the enterprise LLM market has decreased to 25%, with Anthropic taking the lead at 32%.

Despite the increasing competition, OpenAI's revenue is projected to reach $12.7 billion in 2025. The company is also in talks for a $30 billion funding round, with investors close to committing $7.5 billion for the second portion. OpenAI aims for profitability by 2029, with projected revenue potentially soaring to $125 billion.
