OpenAI is considering offering AI infrastructure services to other companies, potentially creating a new revenue stream. This move could help offset the significant costs associated with running the data centres and physical infrastructure required for AI development. The service would allow businesses to tap into OpenAI's resources, similar to Amazon Web Services.
Sarah Friar, OpenAI's CFO, mentioned that this is not an immediate plan but a long-term possibility. She emphasised the importance of developing in-house expertise in AI infrastructure. OpenAI has already partnered with companies like Microsoft and Oracle to finance data centres, including the Stargate Project. CEO Sam Altman has stated that OpenAI may spend trillions on data centres in the future.
OpenAI is also expanding its infrastructure in Europe with the Stargate Norway project, featuring 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs and a focus on renewable energy. This initiative aims to provide compute power for European AI development. OpenAI's potential infrastructure service could accelerate AI innovation and provide a competitive edge in the market.
