Cohere Inc., a Canadian AI firm valued at $6.8 billion USD, has formalised a non-binding agreement with the Canadian government to explore and expand the use of its AI technology within the public sector. The memorandum of understanding (MOU) aims to identify areas where Cohere's AI tools can enhance public services, making them faster, smarter, and more secure. The collaboration also focuses on strengthening Canada's commercial capabilities in AI, exploring how AI can improve government services and support export opportunities.
This agreement builds upon Cohere's previous partnership with the Canadian AI Safety Institute (CAISI) focusing on AI research and safety. The Canadian government aims to leverage AI to boost productivity and modernise operations, with Prime Minister Mark Carney calling for the deployment of AI at scale within the public service. The government sees this collaboration as a priority, moving quickly to explore real-world applications of AI to improve efficiency and effectiveness.
Founded in 2019 by ex-Google researchers, Cohere specialises in large language models (LLMs) that power chatbots and other AI applications. The company has partnered with Canadian and international companies such as Dell, Oracle, RBC and Bell. The agreement does not include a financial component.
