Brazil has directed Meta to remove AI chatbots from its platforms, including Instagram, Facebook and WhatsApp. The government's demand follows concerns that these chatbots, created using Meta's AI Studio, can simulate children and engage in sexually explicit conversations. The Attorney General's Office (AGU) has condemned the proliferation of these bots, stating that they promote the 'eroticisation of children'.
The AGU cited examples of sexually charged interactions with bots pretending to be minors. While the notice doesn't carry immediate penalties, it reminds Meta of its obligation under Brazilian law to promptly remove illicit content, even without a court order. This action follows public outrage over child exploitation cases and increasing scrutiny of tech platforms in Brazil.
Meta has not yet responded to the request. The demand highlights growing pressure on tech companies to address the misuse of generative AI and ensure the safety of children online.
