Nvidia has refuted claims from Chinese state media that its H20 AI chips pose a national security risk. The H20 chips were specifically designed for the Chinese market following US export restrictions on advanced AI chips. A social media account linked to a Chinese state broadcaster alleged the chips were neither technologically advanced, environmentally friendly, nor safe, further claiming they could enable 'remote shutdown' via a hardware 'backdoor'.
China's cyberspace regulator previously questioned Nvidia about potential backdoor security risks, after which Nvidia affirmed its products have no backdoors allowing unauthorised remote access. Despite these assurances, Chinese state media continues to urge Nvidia to provide convincing security proofs to restore market confidence. The US had briefly banned sales of H20 chips earlier in the year but reversed this decision in July.
