OpenAI is reportedly on the verge of launching a new open AI model, potentially within the coming week. This move signifies a shift for the company, which has historically been cautious about sharing its technology. The release marks their first open-weight model since GPT-2. CEO Sam Altman has acknowledged the necessity for OpenAI to embrace this direction, especially with increasing competition in the AI field.
The decision to release an open-weight model is partly a response to the rise of open models from other companies like Meta and DeepSeek. These companies have demonstrated the potential for open models to achieve significant adoption and user engagement. Rigorous testing will be implemented to prevent misuse of the open-weight model.
OpenAI has recently launched several models including the o3-mini, o3, o4-mini and o3-pro. The o3 line of models are designed to devote additional deliberation time when addressing questions that require step-by-step logical reasoning. The latest version of their flagship GPT-4o model was released August 6, 2024.
