Meta has appointed Shengjia Zhao, a co-creator of ChatGPT, as the chief scientist of its Superintelligence Labs. Zhao will be responsible for setting the research agenda and guiding the lab's scientific direction, reporting directly to Meta's Chief AI Officer, Alexandr Wang. Zuckerberg has stated that Zhao co-founded the lab and has been the lead scientist from day one.
Zhao's appointment is part of Meta's broader strategy to strengthen its AI capabilities and compete with industry rivals. Meta has been aggressively recruiting AI talent, including researchers from OpenAI, Google, DeepMind, Anthropic, and Apple. Meta's Superintelligence Labs will operate independently from its FAIR research division. The lab will focus on developing full general intelligence and intends to open-source the technology.
Meta's investment in AI includes a $14.3 billion stake in Scale AI and significant infrastructure projects. The company aims to develop 'personal superintelligence' accessible to everyone.
