Rapidus Corp., a Japanese startup backed by government funding, has successfully created a prototype of an advanced chip. This marks an initial stride in Japan's ambitious plan to catch up in the semiconductor industry. The company is aiming to mass produce 2-nanometer chips by 2027, which are vital for AI and autonomous driving.
Japan is providing substantial financial support to Rapidus, with investments potentially reaching ¥1.7 trillion. This financial backing is crucial, as competitors are also receiving significant funding from their respective governments. Rapidus is collaborating with IBM to gain the technological expertise needed for manufacturing 2nm chips.
With geopolitical tensions rising, Japan aims to revitalise its chip-manufacturing capabilities through Rapidus. The goal is to triple domestic chip sales by 2030. Rapidus is also in discussions with major tech firms to mass-produce advanced chips.
