OpenAI has announced it has reached $10 billion in annual recurring revenue, a substantial increase from $5.5 billion the previous year. This milestone comes less than three years after the launch of ChatGPT. The revenue encompasses sales from consumer products, business offerings, and its API, but excludes licensing revenue from Microsoft and one-time deals.
Despite this impressive growth, OpenAI remains unprofitable, reporting losses of approximately $5 billion in 2024. The company is targeting $125 billion in revenue by 2029. OpenAI currently supports 500 million weekly active users and boasts three million paying business users. In March, it closed a $40 billion funding round, marking the largest private technology deal to date.
This revenue milestone underscores the rapid commercial expansion of OpenAI, driven by increasing enterprise adoption of generative AI. The company's financial momentum and user growth highlight its ambition to establish AI as a leading force in the tech industry.
