Yoshua Bengio, a leading figure in AI, has announced the launch of LawZero, a non-profit research organisation dedicated to creating safer AI systems. With $30 million in funding from sources including Eric Schmidt's philanthropy and Jaan Tallinn, LawZero will explore alternative AI development methodologies to minimise potential risks. Bengio will head a team of over 12 researchers focusing on fundamental research and open-source tools.
LawZero aims to address growing concerns about AI safety by developing new techniques and frameworks. The organisation will promote collaboration and transparency in AI research, ensuring that safety considerations are integrated from the outset. By focusing on verifiable, human-understandable AI, LawZero hopes to guide the development of AI towards more beneficial and trustworthy outcomes. The initiative reflects increasing efforts within the AI community to proactively manage the technology's potential impact on society.
