What happened
Shopify reported a sevenfold increase in AI-sourced online store traffic and an elevenfold rise in AI-powered search orders since January. Its AI assistant, Sidekick, gained over 750,000 new merchant users in Q3, accumulating nearly 100 million total interactions and generating $8 million in activity during October. These developments, alongside partnerships with OpenAI, Perplexity, and Microsoft Copilot, signify a platform-wide shift towards 'agentic commerce' and AI-driven consumer behaviour.
Why it matters
The significant increase in AI-driven traffic and orders, coupled with the expansion of 'agentic commerce' via partnerships, introduces a visibility gap for platform operators and marketing teams. This shift increases exposure to less transparent transaction origination and consumer interaction patterns, raising due diligence requirements for understanding sales attribution and potential policy mismatches in automated purchasing workflows. The burden falls on risk management and compliance to adapt monitoring strategies for AI-mediated commerce.
