Microsoft and Nvidia are set to invest up to $15 billion in Anthropic, an AI start-up and OpenAI competitor. This investment includes Nvidia potentially contributing up to $10 billion and Microsoft up to $5 billion. Anthropic, known for its Claude AI model, has also committed to purchasing $30 billion in computing capacity from Microsoft's Azure cloud service.
Anthropic will utilise Nvidia's architecture to scale its Claude AI model on Microsoft Azure. This collaboration aims to optimise Anthropic's models for enhanced performance, efficiency, and reduced total cost of ownership, while also tailoring future Nvidia architectures for Anthropic's specific workloads. Anthropic's commitment includes up to one gigawatt of compute capacity using Nvidia Grace Blackwell and Vera Rubin systems.
Through this partnership, Microsoft's Azure customers will gain access to a wider selection of models and Claude-specific capabilities. Microsoft plans to integrate Claude across its Copilot family, including GitHub Copilot, Microsoft 365 Copilot, and Copilot Studio. This arrangement positions Claude as the only frontier large language model accessible on all three major cloud services.
