OpenAI has launched ChatGPT Atlas, a new AI-powered web browser, directly challenging Google's dominance in online search. Currently available on macOS, with Windows, iOS, and Android versions coming soon, Atlas integrates ChatGPT's capabilities into the browsing experience. CEO Sam Altman envisions Atlas as a platform where users can converse with web pages, potentially replacing the traditional URL bar with a chatbot interface.
Atlas offers features like a ChatGPT sidebar for summarising and analysing content, in-line writing assistance, and 'agent mode' for task automation such as booking flights or ordering groceries. With user permission, Atlas can remember browsing history to provide personalised suggestions and improve chat responses. The browser also includes incognito mode and parental controls. Built on Chromium, Atlas supports existing web standards and infrastructure.
The AI browser market is projected to reach $76.8 billion by 2034, with North America currently holding the largest market share. While Google's Chrome has a substantial user base, OpenAI believes that AI assistance will redefine web navigation. Atlas aims to provide a seamless browsing experience where users can research, plan, shop and perform tasks with an embedded AI assistant.
