What happened
HCLTech committed $150 million to Sarvam AI's $300 million funding round, led by Bessemer Venture Partners, with strategic investment from NVIDIA and participation from Prosperity7, Activate, Glade Brook Capital, and existing investors. This investment values the three-year-old Bengaluru-based startup at approximately $1.5 billion, nearly seven times its 2023 valuation. Sarvam AI develops foundational models optimised for India's 22 official languages, featuring a voice-first architecture, Mixture-of-Experts (MoE) for efficiency, and edge intelligence through its Sarvam Kaze wearable glasses.
Why it matters
Access to efficient, localised AI infrastructure will expand for Indian enterprises and government agencies. Sarvam AI's voice-first, MoE-optimised models address the 'Tokenisation Tax' of English-centric LLMs, reducing compute costs and improving performance for Indian languages. This investment secures NVIDIA's GPU market share for 'Sovereign AI' initiatives, ensuring India's national AI mission builds on NVIDIA H100 and B200 GPUs. For HCLTech, this represents a strategic move to integrate deeply localised AI into its offerings, transforming from a service provider into an AI orchestrator.
