What happened
Answer.AI's analysis of PyPI data reveals no overall increase in Python package creation or update rates following ChatGPT's release. However, popular AI-related packages demonstrate a significant acceleration, achieving over double the median release frequency. These packages, classified by description and popularity among the 15,000 most downloaded Python packages by December 2025, reached 21-26 median updates annually, compared to approximately 10 for popular non-AI packages. A general, modest increase in update frequency predates AI tools, starting in 2019.
Why it matters
AI coding tools are not broadly increasing software output across the ecosystem. Instead, productivity gains are concentrated within popular, AI-centric projects, accelerating their iteration cycles. Founders and investors evaluating AI's impact on development timelines must recognise this specific, rather than general, effect. Procurement teams assessing AI coding tools should align expectations with this focused productivity boost, understanding it primarily benefits already popular AI-related development, not all software creation.
