What happened
Chinese researchers implemented an AI-assisted clinical decision support system (CDSS) across 77 hospitals, demonstrating improved stroke care quality and reduced new vascular events. The system, which analyses scans and provides treatment recommendations, supported 11,054 acute ischaemic stroke patients from January 2021 to June 2023. Patients receiving CDSS support experienced a 26% reduction in new vascular events at three months (2.9% versus 3.9%) and a 27% reduction at 12 months (4% versus 5.5%), alongside higher care quality performance (91.4% versus 89.8%), per a study published in The BMJ.
Why it matters
Access to validated AI tools will reduce long-term patient complications and standardise care, particularly in resource-constrained regions. The AI-assisted CDSS, integrating into existing hospital information systems, offers a scalable mechanism for improving stroke prognosis and care quality, as evidenced by the 26-27% reduction in new vascular events. While previous AI stroke tools lacked rigorous evaluation, this study provides clinical architects and procurement teams with evidence of efficacy and ease of integration.
