What happened
CrossSense, a London-based team, secured the £1 million Longitude Prize on Dementia for its AI-powered smart glasses. The 75g glasses feature an AI companion, Wispy, which identifies objects and projects visual and audio prompts onto lenses, guiding individuals with early-stage dementia through daily activities. Trials demonstrated improved lives for three out of four patients. The prize, funded by Alzheimer's Society and Innovate UK, will accelerate research, with wider availability anticipated in early 2027.
Why it matters
This award validates AI's role in enhancing independence for dementia patients, shifting care models towards assistive technology. For healthcare providers and procurement teams, the £1 million investment accelerates a proven solution, potentially reducing long-term care costs by supporting longer home-based living. The technology's adaptive AI mechanism offers personalised support, a critical factor for managing progressive conditions.
