What happened
Transport Scotland deployed AI-powered cameras across 12 Scottish locations for a six-month survey, marking the UK's largest such initiative. These cameras detect drivers using mobile phones and those not wearing seatbelts, processing images with AI to determine offence probability. Transport Secretary Fiona Hyslop stated the trial will inform future enforcement strategies to tackle high-risk behaviours. Acusensus, an Australian tech firm, supported the project, which aims to quantify an estimated 169,000 daily seatbelt non-users and over 28,000 daily handheld device users in Scotland.
Why it matters
The deployment establishes a precedent for AI-driven road surveillance, shifting the baseline for driver monitoring and future enforcement. For privacy advocates and legal teams, this introduces risk: excessive data collection and risk: AI system inaccuracy in determining infractions, despite human review stages. The technology provides a mechanism to quantify specific high-risk behaviours, supporting the goal of reducing road fatalities and injuries, but introduces new constraints on driver anonymity.
