What happened
CSIR-NEERI developed an AI-Integrated Line Source Emission Inventory (LSEI) dashboard, tracking vehicular emissions in real time. The system processes live CCTV traffic footage, identifying and counting vehicle categories like two-wheelers, cars, and heavy-duty vehicles. It then calculates particulate matter (PM), nitrogen oxide (NOx), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrocarbon (HC) emissions. This pilot model, trained on multi-city footage, operates at Ajni Square, Nagpur, with expansion discussions underway with the Nagpur Municipal Corporation and Traffic Department.
Why it matters
Real-time environmental data becomes available for policy decisions, shifting urban management from historical datasets to dynamic, live analysis. This mechanism, processing live CCTV feeds with AI, enables immediate identification of pollution hotspots and peak periods, replacing traditional methods. For CTOs and architects, this highlights operational demands of deploying real-time edge AI and integrating it with urban infrastructure. Investors and founders will note a growing market for AI-driven public sector solutions, as cities prioritise data-informed governance.
