What happened
Google expanded its AI Mode's capability, enabling it to access user Gmail and Google Photos data for tailored response generation. This integration operates by training on specific prompts and the model’s responses, rather than directly on the entire user inbox or photo library. This alters the scope of personal data accessible to the AI for generating outputs. This feature, termed "Personal Intelligence," is opt-in for Google AI Pro and Ultra subscribers in the US, and is not available for Workspace business, enterprise, or education users.
Why it matters
This introduces an increased exposure for personal data within the AI ecosystem, raising the oversight burden for IT security and compliance functions regarding data access and privacy controls. The training mechanism, based on prompts and model responses rather than direct data, creates a less explicit data flow, potentially weakening existing visibility indicators for data usage and accountability.
