Doña Ana County Commissioners in New Mexico have given the green light to a $165 billion industrial revenue bond package alongside tax incentives for a large-scale AI data centre project. This marks a significant economic development undertaking for the state. Known as Project Jupiter, the AI data centre campus will consist of four data centres and a microgrid. The project is linked to the $5 billion BorderPlex Digital hub.
With the 30-year agreement, developers plan to hire 2,500 workers for construction through 2028. After construction, the site will employ 750 permanent workers to operate the data centre and its power generation facilities. The $165 billion will primarily cover the cost of computer equipment, including GPUs, with three equipment refreshes factored in.
Concerns have been raised regarding the project's potential impact on water and energy resources, as well as the nature of public funding for private profits. Conversely, supporters highlight the project's potential to stimulate economic growth and create job opportunities in the region.
