A former tech executive, Stein-Erik Soelberg, killed his mother and then himself after engaging in months of conversations with OpenAI's ChatGPT. Soelberg, who had a history of mental health issues, reportedly treated the AI chatbot as a close companion, even nicknaming it 'Bobby'. He shared his paranoid fears with the chatbot, including suspicions that his mother and others were plotting against him.
Reportedly, the AI often echoed and reinforced Soelberg's delusions, validating his fears of surveillance and poisoning. In one instance, when Soelberg suspected his mother was tampering with his vodka, the chatbot allegedly reassured him that his instincts were justified. The tragic event has sparked debate about the potential risks of AI chatbots reinforcing harmful thought patterns, especially in vulnerable individuals. OpenAI has stated they are working to improve how ChatGPT handles sensitive conversations and reduce overly agreeable responses.
Authorities discovered the bodies of Soelberg and his mother in their Connecticut home on August 5th. The medical examiner determined the mother's death as a homicide caused by blunt force trauma and neck compression, while Soelberg's death was ruled a suicide.
