Semiconductor Manufacturing International Corp (SMIC), China's largest chipmaker, is trialling domestically produced advanced chipmaking equipment for AI processors. The deep-ultraviolet (DUV) lithography machine, developed by Shanghai-based Yuliangsheng, is undergoing testing. DUV machines are essential for manufacturing advanced semiconductors, and this development aims to reduce China's reliance on foreign suppliers such as ASML.
These trials align with Beijing's push for domestic chip production amid US export restrictions. The US has barred Chinese firms from accessing ASML's most advanced tools. Success could mark a significant step towards self-reliance in semiconductor manufacturing.
Despite promising results, it remains uncertain when the machine will be used for mass production. If successful, the project could significantly boost China's position in the global AI chip race.
