MTN Group Ltd, Africa's largest mobile network operator, is reportedly in discussions with US and European companies to develop data centres across the continent. These facilities are intended to support the increasing demand for artificial intelligence services. MTN's CEO, Ralph Mupita, highlighted the strategic importance of this initiative.
The expansion aims to enhance digital infrastructure and provide the necessary resources for businesses to digitalise operations. MTN's Ambition 2025 strategy reflects a commitment to environmental, social, and governance (ESG) principles, with the new data centres designed to minimise their carbon footprint through efficient cooling systems and diverse energy sources. This move aligns with the growing need for local data ecosystems to ensure data sovereignty and foster innovation within Africa.
MTN has established an AI Centre of Excellence and a Cloud CoE, supported by a software solutions team of over 300 engineers, to coordinate AI activities across the Group. The company is also investing in technology solutions to enable consumers, SMEs, and large enterprises to leverage AI opportunities.
