A recent Google Cloud survey highlights the pervasive adoption of AI within the video game industry, with 87% of developers leveraging AI agents to optimise workflows and automate tasks. This trend reflects the industry's drive to reduce costs amidst recent layoffs and market saturation. The study, conducted by The Harris Poll, surveyed 615 developers across multiple countries, revealing that 97% believe generative AI is reshaping the industry. AI's impact spans various areas, including automating repetitive tasks (95%), playtesting and balancing (47%), localisation and translation (45%), and code generation (44%).

Beyond efficiency gains, AI is also fostering creative innovation. Developers are experimenting with AI for dynamic level design, animation, and dialogue writing. Furthermore, 89% of developers anticipate AI will change player expectations, with 37% believing gamers will seek more lifelike experiences. While developers acknowledge the potential of AI-driven game engines and gameplay balancing, concerns persist regarding data privacy, ownership rights, and the costs associated with AI integration.

Despite these concerns, a significant portion (29%) of developers believe AI could democratise the industry, enabling smaller studios to compete with larger, more established companies. The findings suggest AI is no longer a futuristic concept but a present-day reality transforming game development and player experiences.
