The increasing demand for power in the US, driven significantly by the expansion of artificial intelligence, faces a major obstacle: a growing shortage of transformers. This shortage could seriously impede efforts to meet the escalating power needs of AI and other sectors.
The scarcity of transformers is attributed to several factors, including supply chain disruptions, increasing electrification, and the expansion of renewable energy generation. The limited domestic production of essential materials, such as grain-oriented electrical steel, and reliance on foreign manufacturers exacerbate the problem. Utility companies are struggling with longer lists of grid maintenance, development projects, and hardening, all of which require key electrical equipment like transformers.
Efforts are underway to increase domestic transformer production and address supply chain vulnerabilities. However, these initiatives may not keep pace with the rapidly increasing demand. The situation is further complicated by factors such as tariffs, weather events, and the push for electrification, potentially leading to continued price increases and project delays.
