The rapid expansion of AI is placing significant strain on the largest US power grid, managed by PJM Interconnection, triggering energy emergency alerts. Since June, PJM has issued nine energy emergency alerts. The surge in electricity demand, driven by data centres supporting AI systems, is pushing the grid to its limits.
This increased demand has led to critical shortages and soaring electricity costs, with some areas potentially seeing bill increases of up to 20%. Experts are advocating for self-sufficient energy solutions at data centres, including on-site power facilities, to alleviate the pressure on the grid. PJM expects peak usage this summer to exceed 154,000 megawatts, potentially breaking all-time records during heat waves.
To address these challenges, incentives for integrating self-sustained power solutions are being considered to expedite the approval process for energy-secure projects. PJM is also collaborating with Google to use AI to streamline grid interconnections and manage the growing backlog of power generation projects.
