Perplexity has launched Comet, an AI-powered web browser designed to rival Google Chrome. Comet integrates natural language processing (NLP) directly into the browsing experience, enabling users to find information, summarise content, and generate text using AI.
Comet utilises both on-device processing and cloud-based APIs to optimise performance. Lightweight neural networks handle basic tasks like text summarisation, while complex queries are routed through Perplexity’s API endpoints. The browser also employs predictive loading to anticipate resource needs, prefetching linked pages and dynamically allocating CUDA cores.
Initially available to Mac users with Apple Silicon chips, Comet is now available to Windows users, with an Android version underway. The browser integrates AI tools that allow users to ask questions and manage emails more efficiently. Comet supports Chrome extensions, but AI-enhanced add-ons face restrictions, including memory quotas and mandatory privacy manifest declarations.
