BRICS leaders are set to advocate for data protection measures concerning AI, focusing on preventing unauthorised data collection and ensuring fair compensation mechanisms. The discussions took place during a two-day summit in Rio de Janeiro. The bloc is addressing concerns that large technology firms in developed nations have been resistant to paying copyright fees for materials used in AI model training.
The group is calling for AI governance frameworks that uphold content creators' rights and grant individuals control over their personal data. These frameworks would include safeguards against excessive or unauthorised data collection, promoting transparency, accountability, and mechanisms for redress. BRICS nations are also seeking international co-operation in shaping AI governance and regulatory frameworks.
These efforts highlight the determination of developing countries to secure a stake in the AI landscape, promoting a just and ethical technological future. The aim is to foster domestic AI innovation aligned with socio-economic development while reducing disparities between developed and developing countries.
