Samsung has invested in South Korean AI chip startup Rebellions, supporting the company's development of its second-generation AI chip, Rebel. Rebellions is currently raising $150 million to $200 million, with Samsung's investment as part of this funding round. The specific amount of Samsung's investment remains undisclosed.

Rebellions plans to launch an IPO after this funding round. Founded in 2020, Rebellions specialises in AI semiconductor chips based on neural processing units (NPUs). The company is co-developing the Rebel chip with Samsung, utilising a 4nm process. Rebellions' merger with SK Telecom's AI semiconductor subsidiary, SAPEON, in December 2024, increased its corporate valuation above ₩1 trillion ($750 million).

The Rebel chip is designed for large language models (LLMs) and will use Samsung's 4nm process and high bandwidth memory (HBM3E). Mass production is scheduled to commence in 2025. Rebellions aims to compete with Nvidia in the AI chip market, focusing on energy-efficient AI accelerators for generative AI workloads.
