OpenAI and Oracle are expanding their collaboration to develop an additional 4.5 gigawatts of data centre capacity in the US. This expansion is part of a larger initiative to support the growing demands of AI workloads. The partnership aims to bolster US leadership in AI, accelerate reindustrialisation, and generate numerous jobs.
The collaboration will bring OpenAI's total data centre capacity under development with Oracle to over 5 gigawatts, running on over 2 million chips. Oracle will construct and expand hyperscale facilities across multiple states, including Texas, Michigan, Ohio, and Pennsylvania. The increased capacity will support OpenAI's next-generation AI model training and inference workloads. This initiative is part of OpenAI's broader strategy to diversify its cloud infrastructure beyond Microsoft Azure.
This agreement forms part of the Stargate initiative, a $500 billion AI infrastructure project led by OpenAI and Oracle, alongside partners like SoftBank. The project aims to construct large-scale data centres across the US to support the development of advanced AI models.
