A recent study reveals that a significant majority (72%) of teenagers in the United States have engaged with AI companions. These AI companions are defined as chatbots designed for personal conversations, distinct from AI assistants used for homework or general queries. The study highlights that over half of these teens regularly interact with AI companions, with platforms like Character.AI, Replika, and Nomi being popular choices.
While many teens use AI companions for entertainment and curiosity, concerns arise regarding potential mental health impacts. A notable percentage of users have discussed serious topics with AI rather than real people, and some have shared personal information. Despite these concerns, most teens maintain a balanced perspective, finding human interactions more satisfying and prioritising real-life friendships. However, a significant minority report feeling as satisfied or more satisfied conversing with AI companions compared to humans.
Given the potential risks, there are recommendations for stronger safeguards and usage limitations for those under 18. The study also indicates an age-related difference in trust, with younger teens showing more confidence in AI companion advice than older teens. This highlights the need for continued research and careful consideration of the role of AI in adolescent development.
