Meta has decided against signing the EU's code of practice for artificial intelligence, arguing that the guidelines for adhering to the AI Act are an overreach. The EU AI Act code of practice is designed to help companies comply with the AI Act, which becomes applicable on August 2, 2025.
The code of practice is a voluntary tool comprised of three chapters: transparency, copyright and safety and security. It was prepared by independent experts and is intended to guide AI model providers in complying with the AI Act. The code offers methods for demonstrating compliance with obligations under Articles 53 and 55 of the AI Act. By adhering to the code, AI model providers can show they comply with the AI Act, reducing their administrative burden and providing more legal certainty.
Meta's decision not to sign the code raises questions about the practical application and acceptance of the EU's AI regulations. The European Commission will also publish guidelines on key concepts related to general-purpose AI models.
