EU AI Act Implemented

10 July 2025

The European Union has initiated its AI Act, enforcing copyright safeguards and transparency mandates for advanced AI models. The Act requires AI providers to respect EU copyright law, including obtaining permission for using copyrighted data for model training. It also demands transparency regarding the data used and the AI's functionality.

Specifically, providers must maintain detailed documentation about their AI models, including how they were built, trained, and their intended uses. Generative AI models, like ChatGPT, aren't classified as high-risk but must disclose AI-generated content and prevent illegal outputs. High-impact AI models undergo thorough evaluations, with serious incidents reported to the European Commission. The AI Act, which came into force on August 1, 2024, will be fully applicable by August 2, 2026, with certain provisions taking effect sooner.

These measures aim to foster trustworthy AI by ensuring that AI systems are safe, transparent, and non-discriminatory. The Act introduces a risk-based approach, categorising AI systems into unacceptable, high, limited, and minimal risk levels, with corresponding compliance requirements. The goal is to balance technological advancement with the protection of intellectual property rights and the promotion of ethical AI development.
