Honor, the smartphone manufacturer formerly under Huawei, is expanding into the robotics sector with the development of humanoid robots. This move is part of a larger $10 billion AI initiative, dubbed the 'Honor Alpha Plan', aimed at transforming the company into a leading AI device ecosystem player. Honor's CEO, James Li Jian, envisions a three-step plan, encompassing intelligent phones, physical AI (robotics), and ultimately, artificial general intelligence (AGI).
Honor has already collaborated with Unitree Robotics, assisting them in achieving a record-breaking running speed for a humanoid robot. The company intends to foster partnerships to broaden the possibilities within the robotics field. This strategic shift follows a decline in Honor's smartphone sales in China, prompting a repositioning towards AI-driven technologies. Honor has established new labs focused on embodied AI and bionic body research to support this expansion.
