Lawrence Summers has resigned from OpenAI's board following the release of emails documenting his correspondence with Jeffrey Epstein. Summers, formerly the US Treasury Secretary and Harvard president, stated his departure aligns with his decision to step back from public commitments. He expressed gratitude for his time with the company and optimism for its future.
OpenAI acknowledged Summers' resignation and thanked him for his contributions. Summers joined the board in 2023 during a period of leadership transition. His resignation follows the release of documents by a House of Representatives oversight committee, detailing email exchanges between Summers and Epstein.
Summers has also stepped down from other public roles. Harvard University, where Summers is a professor, will launch a new investigation into Summers's connections with Epstein.
