What happened
SoftBank divested its $5.8 billion stake in Nvidia, reallocating capital towards AI ventures, including OpenAI. Concurrently, SoftBank initiated collaboration with Nvidia to construct Japan's most powerful AI supercomputer, leveraging the NVIDIA Blackwell platform. SoftBank will deploy this Blackwell-powered DGX SuperPOD for internal generative AI development and offer access to Japanese universities, research institutions, and businesses. Additionally, SoftBank is establishing an AI marketplace utilising NVIDIA AI Enterprise software and previously piloted a combined AI and 5G telecom network with Nvidia's AI Aerial platform.
Why it matters
The deployment of a Blackwell-powered DGX SuperPOD for internal and external generative AI development, alongside an NVIDIA AI Enterprise-based marketplace, introduces significant operational constraints. This expands the oversight burden for platform operators and IT security teams due to increased exposure to diverse data governance requirements and multi-tenant access control complexities. Compliance teams face heightened due diligence requirements for managing data residency, intellectual property, and usage policies across external academic and commercial users within a shared, high-performance computing environment.
