OpenAI has launched a new Apps SDK, enabling developers to integrate applications directly within ChatGPT conversations. This allows users to interact with services like Spotify, Canva, Coursera, Figma, Zillow, Expedia and Booking.com without leaving the chat interface. Users can access these apps by mentioning them in the chat, with ChatGPT also suggesting relevant apps based on the conversation's context.
The Apps SDK, built on the Model Context Protocol (MCP), allows developers to create interactive experiences, including maps, playlists and presentations. OpenAI plans to introduce a dedicated app directory and monetization options for developers in the future. The initial rollout excludes EU users, but OpenAI intends to expand availability soon.
This initiative aims to transform ChatGPT into a comprehensive digital assistant and a hub for conversational computing. The integration of third-party apps streamlines workflows and enhances user experience by blending productivity, creativity and AI in real-time.
